I attended and photographed a Mannequin Pussy show this weekend. I’ve gone to many concerts since moving to college, and this definitely earned a spot in my top 5 shows. Despite having to be cut short a few songs due to lightning, their performance was nothing short of stellar, and their fans proved their loyalty by not only staying as the rained poured down on them but also still bringing excellent crowd energy. I watched as fans trickled out of the venue, soaked in rain water with smudged eye makeup and smiling faces.
I love concerts - not only just to see how artists choose to execute their music in the live music setting, but also on a collective basis, to see this thing that brings hundreds of people together. With the exception of the people that are there simply to catch a show, many concertgoers that attend have a personal, individual relationship with the music that’s playing in front of them. The music has countless definitions for each face amongst the crowd, and that’s amazing to me. There’s a lot of awful things in the world, but it’s neat to see people come together for one night to put aside worries and responsibilities and just indulge in the music. Music is a way of decorating time, but it’s also a way to pause it for a bit.
